Speaking

Dec 26 2009

When I speak, I like to be informative and entertaining. I use Apple Keynote (what Al Gore uses in “An Inconvenient Truth”), rather than Powerpoint. So often I need a projector (I have all the adapters for the laptop).

Mostly, I have spoken about my work on The Fortune Cookie Chronicles. (I have spoken on this topic well over 100 times, including at the Library of Congress, Google, Harvard University, and the 92nd Street Y.) An 18-minute example can be seen on TED.com. I have a specific version on Jews and Chinese food that has been popular in synagogues and Jewish Community Centers.

Sometimes I talk about blogging, based on my experience at City Room. I also have a presentation about how journalists can use Twitter.

I often talk to students about journalism as favors for friends. I will likely soon have a polished presentation on the evolution of journalism and business models, when I start seeing.

I wish I could say yes to all the invitations that come my way. It all depends on juggling my schedule (and also whether I have friends in the area that I want to visit). I like meeting interesting people. I have a soft spot for students and particularly for Chinese schools.
